Huia Birds
These two mini wooden boards, hand-painted and illustrated with Huia birds, were inspired by the beautiful black feathers with white tips; I used to see as a little girl in books and old paintings of Maori Chiefs. Wanting to know more about these beautiful feathers, I sought out the information on them and became somewhat inspired by the unusual and beautiful - and once Native bird of New Zealand...
The Huia bird: A beautiful, though extinct species of bird, native to New Zealand. One could not survive without the other due to their beak shape. They mated for life, feeding each other.
This colourful design is available in black or white, on wood or paper (black ink with water colours on white paper) and creates a perfect gift for engaged couples, newly weds or even for Anniversaries.
I have surrounded the birds with native botanicals like Miro berries, Kawakawa and Kowhai, to give an extra sense of the beautiful nature in NZ.
