“My Grandmother's Strength", arose from a re-occurring dream I had, during the first isolation we had here in 2020.  The thoughts provoked were deep and prolonged. So much so, that it became the conceptual focus of my painting for the "Reflections" exhibition at our local art gallery.

The imagery in the painting is my Kui (Grandmother) holding a kete (a woven basket for collecting Tuatua / small clams), ready to wade into the deep water on a stormy day. The aloneness on the empty beach, and the lack of family members, who would normally be there helping her to gather the seafood, creates a sense of trepidation in the back of your mind. The anticipation of the tidal-like wave also gives an added sense of worry for her.  Although, she has already collected a basket-full of shellfish and appears to be ready at the waters edge for more? This little woman was made of incredible stuff and had an inner strength that seemed magical, to this granddaughter.
I hope you enjoy the painting, she's acrylic on canvas and sized at approximately 76cm x 114cm.  Perhaps I will get some sleep to evoke another!
